First Night - Congress btw 5th & 6th - December 31, 2006

Aww man... I'm here in H-town trying to figure out what I wanna do for NYE... and Austin seems like it'll be off the chain.

First Night - Hip Hop Block Party with of course the B-Boys... Austin Poetry Slam... DJ Nick Nack... and graffiti artist Nate Nordstrom... with special guests... NOOK and Blacklisted Individuals @ Congress between 5th and 6th... NYE Dec 31st!

Here's to a Happy and safe New Years!

I picture this thing like Dave Chappelle's Block Party...

More info:

Nate Nordstrom once stood in the Mojo’s alley, hearing teenagers talk about Sloke’s art. They didn’t know the 32-year-old beside them was responsible.

“There’s a secret identity,” Nate said. “They get to see your mark, and you get to scurry across rooftops or something.”

He remembered the Mojo’s saga in his house, where several fans whirled, and a wall was covered in silver, red, orange and green paint. Beside monsters and aliens, and the phrase “Good girls are never remembered,” a girl with a flower in her hair said, “It feels so good to be bad.” Along the stairwell were four stencils of a woman with wavy hair in a cutoff tank top and a skirt. Her statements were: “Welcome home, Nate.” “Where’ve you been?” “I missed you!” “Now get out of my house.”

He’s “old school;” Al Martinez taught him the basics in the early 1990s. He tells those who are serious about graffiti to get a mentor, to learn etiquette (don’t paint over someone’s work unless you’re better), to practice so you have more than the bubble letters of your name to put on concrete, to be more than a tagger, to be a writer.

“All these tags look like shit,” he said. “They were an original part of graffiti, they were your signature. But now, kids don’t want to learn. They learn how to do bubble letters, and then they go over our work.”

Nate helped form the No Boundaries Krew, which he said “put Texas on the map.”

“Today, there’s a whole new generation of writers: Friks, Gomer, Degas, Mes Cents, Heavy. They’re 18 to 25 years old,” he said. “A lot of kids, when they get into graffiti, they get into it really young.”

B-Boy City - Whisky Bar - December 31, 2006

Any New Year's plans?!? Me neither. If I wasn't in Houston... ringing in the New Year with B-Boy City @ Whisky would be proper.

How's everyone doing?!? Happy Holidays! I've been so busy running around in Houston it's not even funny. Vacation is more work that actual work. One really needs a vacation for their vacation. Insane. The Galleria was so packed yesterday... you wouldn't believe... but lots of cool new shops and gear... and I didn't buy a damn thing! I had no purpose for shopping... and my friend, Ellen, was getting pissed. That's a difference between guys and girls.

So went to my boi Mike's house party/bday party last night... Happy Birthday Mike and Thanh! It had all the elements of a good house party... drunks, fights, and cops... good times. ;)

More info:

Diamond is the hardest known natural material (second-hardest material to ultrahard fullerite), and is the most expensive of the two best known forms (or allotropes) of carbon, whose hardness and high dispersion of light make it useful for industrial applications and jewelry. (The other equally well known allotrope is graphite.) Diamonds are specifically renowned as a mineral with superlative physical qualities — they make excellent abrasives because they can be scratched only by other diamonds, Borazon, ultrahard fullerite, or aggregated diamond nanorods, which also means they hold a polish extremely well and retain luster. About 130 million carats (26,000 kg) are mined annually, with a total value of nearly USD $9 billion. About 100 tons are synthesized annually.

Slick Rick - Emo's - December 16, 2006

Gotta love that smile... Slick Rick... the originator of "La Di Da Di" ... will be @ Emo's on Dec 16th! ... now that's dope!

I think friends should warn you when they send nasty websites while at work. I know it ruins the shock value but come on! My friend Ellen thinks it's amusing to periodically send me obscene links... so she sent me this today... AND I had a female co-worker sitting right next to me at the time. Geez... luckily I closed the browser quick enough.

Lotus Tribe - Emo's - November 24, 2006

UPDATE: Drama... so the word on the street is that Romeo and the ATX B-Boys' weren't contacted about this event. And Lotus Tribe have used B-Boy City's name without permission. You be the judge whether you want to support this event.

You's a window shopper... went to do some souvenir shopping in central Zurich today... and EVERYTHING'S closed! But there were hundreds of people runnin' around window shopping... asking around I found out that everyone's f*ckin' bored, so they just go out and walk around. Well... I guess that's why Switzerland's not the superpower. ;)

Well... atleast the Kunsthaus Museum was open... highly recommended... the Monet's and Dali's were amazing... Munch and Picasso were awesome too... really Monet just blew my mind.

So the Lotus Tribe have another show at Emo's on Friday, Nov 24 starting at 7:00pm (see below for complete details)... but it's filled with MC Battles and Austin vs. SATX B-Boy Battles. Awesome! Too bad I'll be in Houston for Thanksgiving, but this should be awesome. I'm sure Romeo and crew will show those SATX boys how we do in the ATX.

So just saw this video on MTV Switzerland... it just beat out Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby... ;) I have no idea what she's saying, but I still like this version better.

Rob Swift - Whisky Bar - November 18, 2006

Well... I just found out today that I'm headed to Zurich, Switzerland for work for a week starting tomorrow. So the AHHS might be out of commission for a little bit... but hopefully I'll be able to get online over there. I'm a little scrrrd cuz I'm going for a customer engagement and being an engineer I don't do much customer facing... but it'll be good experience... plus I think they just need a cute face. ;)

So... before I go... I wanna leave you guys with a little treat... Rob Swift, this Saturday, Nov 18th at the Whisky Bar with DJ Tats and Prince Klassen!!!!

I won't be able to make it, but let me know how it goes...

More info:

Rob Swift is a hip hop DJ and Turntablist.

Born and raised in Jackson Heights, Queens, Swift (born Robert Aguilar) initially got into DJing by watching his father and brother. “My dad was a salsa and merengue DJ. My brother learned how to scratch and do all the hip hop deejaying stuff on my dad’s equipment (without his permission) and I’d sit there and watch him. When I entered the sixth grade, I decided I wanted to learn.” So unlike those who got influenced through hip hop records, DMC and NMS tapes, or movies, Swift educated himself with the classic turntable beats of the early '80sNew York playground pioneers while listening to funk and jazz at home. “My older brother exposed me to all that,” he says. “All the stuff I create as a DJ is rooted in the songs that I heard from Bob James, Herbie Hancock and James Brown to Quincy Jones and old DJs like Grandmaster Flash and Grandwizard Theodore. That’s where my roots are.” In 1990, Swift enrolled as a student at Baruch College in New York and in 1995, graduated with a degree in psychology. “While I was deejaying I pursued college. Speech class and English serve a purpose, you know?” Some say that his education also translates into his cerebral style of scratching, juggling and making music.

Swift is a former member of the Turntablist group The X-ecutioners as of late 2005 and as of 2006; with Mike Patton’s latest project Peeping Tom.

Next - Alamo Drafthouse Downtown - November 30, 2006

Another great Planet Rock Party has come and gone... sigh... hope everyone made it out... Ernesto even made it out ;) with Charles... we even made a pit stop by Plush for the Tupac vs Biggie... afterwards our drunk asses decided to come back to my place and cut it up on the 1's and 2's and do a little break dancin'... until we realized it was too slippery and combined with drunkenness we were liable to hurt ourselves... we decided to quit while we were ahead and join Romeo at a taqueria for some dinnerfast (you know drunken meal between dinner and breakfast)... and that's where Romeo proceeded to school us on the history of Austin Hip Hop. Good times...

Now on to the show... DJ Mel's gonna be at the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown spinnin' for the reception of the screening of the film Next: A Primer On Urban Painting... RSVP for the event here... the show is free with a Q and A afterwards with the director Pablo Aravena.

More info:

Here’s a stumper - if a graffiti artist takes can to canvas, not train car, and hangs it in a gallery, is it still graffiti? Even if the visual code of hip hop graf is intact, the hallowed laws of impermanence and reclaiming one’s turf have been compromised. So what do we call it now? “‘Post-graffiti’ is a term I could get comfortable with,” says local filmmaker Pablo Aravena. “Mind you, that’s what they called it in the early ’80s, when they started putting graf into galleries.” The working title of Aravena’s current documentary project is Next: A Primer on Urban Painting, suggesting another possible term for what the graf tradition has evolved into since its dawn in the Bronx almost three decades ago.

Blitz and Zeale 32 are having a video release party at the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown on Sunday, Nov 19th before the showing of Before the Music Dies. Which by the way is a cool documentary on the current state of the music industry... I love the Erykah Badu interviews. ;) Presale tix are $5... get them online here.

More info:

BEFORE THE MUSIC DIES tells the story of American music at this precarious moment. Filmmakers Andrew Shapter and Joel Rasmussen traveled the country, hoping to understand why mainstream music seems so packaged and repetitive, and whether corporations really had the power to silence musical innovation. The answers they found on this journey–ultimately, the promise that the future holds–are what makes BEFORE THE MUSIC DIES both riveting and exhilarating.

Lady Legacy at Tambaleo on Wed, Nov 15th at 10:30pm... Hip Hop Hump Day! Check her out!

Man... I've got a bad headache. :(

Mike and Ike - Whisky Bar - November 17, 2006

Mike and Ike and In the Pocket at Whisky Bar on Nov 17th!

So during work today we went to Burger King for take out... we had a 11:30-1:00pm meeting... so we had to eat fast and drrrty... so I got my usual the number 1... whopper, fries and a dr pepper... then while sitting in the meeting... i'm like burpin up my whopper the whole time... you know how you can smell it coming up. mmmmh mmmh good... i got to eat that whopper twice... goin' down and comin' up. ;)

More info:

That classic sound is coming out of Austin, Texas, and its making noise in the hip hop scene as Mike & Ike present their debut album, Introducing Mike & Ike. The duo blends smart, but accessible lyrics with the infectious sounds of jazz and soul music to create a style that recalls the best elements of where rap music has been, but stays fresh and inventive, always looking toward the future. In a musical landscape full of studio gangsters rapping about how hard they are and money they may or may not actually have, Mike & Ike are a refreshing change of pace. Rather than fall into the all-too-common trap of preaching about what they are not, however, they choose to focus on what they are, and the original styles they bring. They kick intelligent rhymes that a wide range of people can relate to their own daily struggles and triumphs. The raps show that the two are aware of and concerned about social ills, but avoid becoming overly self-righteous or cliché in their treatment of them. Mike & Ike know when to be serious, but never lose sight of the idea that hip hop should be at least as much about the good as the bad, and maintain an overall positive and fun vibe on the album. Tracks such as "Classic Sound", "Home Invasion", and "Genie in Disguise" show that Mike & Ike have what it takes to bring their classic sound to the masses.

So went and watched Borat last night... oh lord... what a funny movie... I still can't get that hotel scene out of my mind! Good lord!

Sqratch Karnival 11 - Austin Music Lab - October 27, 2006

Get ready for the Halloween edition of Sqratch Karnival! Tearin' it up for you once again at the Music Lab on Oct. 27th. Once again, you're welcome to bring your own records, yourself, and show off your skills. Turntables open at 8:00pm.

So today is Diwali, a Hindu festival, aka. Festival of Lights... Happy Diwali everyone!

More info:

Scratching is a DJ or turntablist technique originated by Grand Wizard Theodore, an early hip hop DJ from New York (AMG). Theodore developed scratching from DJ Grandmaster Flash, who describes scratching as, "nothing but the back-cueing that you hear in your ear before you push it [the recorded sound] out to the crowd." (Toop, 1991) Kool Herc was also an important early figure. The technique is designed to accentuate the work of the DJ by creating an assortment of sounds through the rhythmical manipulation of a vinyl record, and has spread from hip hop culture to a number of other musical forms. Within hip hop culture, scratching is still of great importance in determining the skill of a DJ, and a number of competitions are held across the globe in which DJs battle one another in displays of great virtuosity.

K-Ci & JoJo - Frank Erwin Center - November 18, 2006

Aww... how cute... how about that pic of the 2 brothers K-Ci and JoJo. Of Jodeci fame, one of my fav groups, K-Ci and JoJo are coming to the Frank Erwin Center, Nov. 18th! Headlining the show are the legendary Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. Tix go on sale this Monday, Oct. 23rd, get them here. Man what the old school!

So we hit happy hour today for a little work celebration, actually the celebration of the killing of our project, kinda bitter sweet. Well we hustled our managers at pool and now they have to run around the volleyball courts 10 times during office hours. Can't wait. Just doin' my best to stick it to the man.

More info:

When they were children, K-Ci and JoJo grew up singing in a Pentecostal church, touring the south. As teenagers, they met Donald DeGrate, Jr. (DeVante Swing) and Dalvin DeGrate (Mr. Dalvin). All four members openly talked about forming a group.

When DeVante was 16, he journeyed to Minneapolis to join Prince's organization, but he was turned down. He then asked K-Ci and JoJo to join him in New York to shop demo tapes around featuring his production skills and their singing. Dalvin decided to tag along at the last minute. Soon thereafter, Heavy D got his hands on a tape and passed it on to Uptown Records CEO Andre Harrell, who made arrangements to sign the group, who called themselves Jodeci.

Sean "Puffy" Combs was credited for creating the group gritty, hard-edged looks, and for helping develop the group's new jack swing-styled sound for their debut album Forever My Lady.

K-Ci and JoJo had a notable career with Jodeci, topping the R&B singles charts with such songs as "Stay", "Come & Talk To Me", and "Cry for You". In 1992, DeVante formed the Swing Mob, a group of artists, songwriters, and producers that took part in their later albums. Jodeci released three albums, but in 1996 the group went on an indefinite hiatus (the group never formally split up). Jodeci is credited with starting the musical careers of Missy Elliott, Timbaland, and Ginuwine.

I looked for something different and interesting... so... Back to the Beat this Friday, Oct. 6th with DJ Starsign at the Peacock for some soul funk, breaks and hip hop classics!

The Peacock looks a bit shi shi frou frou (I can't believe I just used that phrase)... anyways that means very white. ;) But I'm sure it'll be a good time... let's bring some crunk to this place.

More info:

Ultra-hip Eastside neighborhood boasts one of the most creatively decorated bars of the city.

True School Monday's - Whisky Bar - October 2, 2006

Yo... Master of Self of Crew54 wrote in to remind us about Monday nights at Whisky Bar... the Crew54 will be on stage with Clemits and as always DJ Tako and Notion rippin' it up 'till the night ends.

Dude just got back from H-town... I had to wrestle my dog, Snoop, from the kung-fu grips of my parents. Just imagine the Sprite commercial where the kung-fu master drinks the Sprite out of the can before the student can move it away... it was exactly like that!

Man MySpace got videos... that's some serious competition to Google and YouTube... sorry the geek in me came out again.

More info:

While many wannabes talk about how they are going to blow, how much they grind, what they are going to do some day somehow, but sit around doing nothing, CREW54 rose from the darkness to get the shine they deserve. Beginning as a simple one song collaborative effort between G-Christ of The Texas Immigrants, and masterOFself of The M7 Movement; the CREW54 is ready to take their place the Central Texas Hip-Hop scene and beyond.

Mojoe - KVRX - October 1, 2006

Mojoe... they're a couple of smooth operators. I'm really diggin' these cats. Check out some of their music. Very mellow... very chill. Too bad their not having a show... but they'll be on 91.7 KVRX the UT student radio on Oct. 1st at 8pm for an interview and performance. Gotta check them out!

So my coworker's wife has this saying... "Make great things happen!"... well... I just had a green tea latte and it's not really agreeing with me... so I'm about to make a great thing happen... I'll let you know how it goes! Woohoo... Game Boy time!

More info:

Easy Lee (Charles Peters) and Tre (Treson Scipio) are MOJOE, a duo that has often described itself as The Roots meet OutKast over dinner with Marvin Gaye at DAngelos house. MOJOE channels that spirit with Classic.Ghetto.Soul., a timeless showcase of its sumptuous blend of worldwise poetry, sweet soul melodies and harmonies, reverent blues and jazz, and Dirty South hip-hop.
