As an artist, a creator, a human, we’re on a seemingly never ending quest to “find our voice”. Truly expressing ourselves, and speaking our internal truth is what we all seek. The “voice” is the elusive muse who slips around the corner just as you catch a glimpse. Our “voice” is our nakedness for all the world to see.

Kato Dox is an up-and-coming artist who is redefining Austin hip hop and in the process defining himself. Our story starts with a young man growing up in Dallas, TX.

Rage Against the Machine

As with many teens, the teenage years are an emotional roller coaster. As a teenager growing into your own, in the process, you must reject your origin. This growth process, quite often, is expressed with emotions of anger and the targets are your parents. For Kato, this time period was no different.

One of the outlets that helps you cope with these internal volcanoes is music. During this time, Kato would find solace and therapy in the words and rhymes of Eminem and Tupac. The musical outlet would be the fuel for Kato to cope with young adulthood and to connect with hip hop.

The Second Generation

Growing up as a second generation Asian American is interesting in that you’re torn between two worlds. On the one hand, you have the traditional Asian culture and mindset which your parents try to instill in you. And on the other hand, you have the American culture that the world outside of your home is presenting you.

As a young man, finding your place between these two worlds can be confusing. While Kato would work at his studies as a “good Asian kid”, he would also start exploring his passions and artistic abilities with poetry and band. While at the same time, his love and experimentation of hip hop would be hidden from his family in the confines of his bedroom and his notebooks of rhymes.

As Kato honed his skills, he would learn to get out of the mindset of fitting in to pave his own path. During this time, he would put out three mix tapes and begin the journey to discover his own voice and sound. The path would lead to finding a more authentic self and a more authentic sound in his music.

Realizing A New State Of Mind - RANSOM

Now, after putting in the hard work and graduating from UT, he's shown his parents a young successful adult, which has lead to their support of his musical aspirations. In addition, it’s become a family affair with his brothers, who are also musically inclined, and play guitar as part of the Kato Dox band.

The Ransom Life brand is a record label with Kato’s extended family of Jony Glez and Benson J.T., both who are college buddies and help round out the skill set of the team. As you talk to Kato, the concept of “team” is a common theme and you realize his understanding of building a great team is one of the keys to success.

On the heels of his recently released album, Infinity, Kato and the team aim to keep the momentum moving by strategically promoting the album, playing at shows, and starting the work on the next album.

The great thing about our culture, the hip hop culture, is the inclusive and embracing nature and the different influences that can spark one’s love for this culture. Hip Hop is the culture of the youth. As Kevin Powell put it, “Hip-Hop is urban folk art, period. And that urban folk art is about the lives of a very unique group of people, of how they made something out of nothing, and how that nothing has come to define an entire era in many ways, be it our language, our fashion, our attitudes, our art, the way we make music, and the way we do and do not communicate across race, gender, geography, and cultures.”

Clemits, an MC and producer, came to Austin as a young man. In Midland, Texas, where he grew up, Clemits drew many of his influences from skateboarding and his group, the MSG Crew.

Skateboarding

Like many young men, Clemits found skateboarding or skateboarding found Clemits, if you’d like to get philosophical. Skateboarding has it’s own storied culture with its own icons and folklore. Both cultures, hip hop and skateboarding, are very much intertwined. And like hip hop, skateboarding is a conduit for youthful self expression.

As a skateboarder, Clemits would have dreams of one day becoming a pro skater. And through these connections, he would be greatly influenced by his friend Gest of Fools Inc., who would turn him onto some of the more serious graffiti art and artists and well as expanding his knowledge of underground hip hop.

Another early crossover between skateboarding and hip hop which would greatly influence Clemits, would be the 411 Video Magazine. 411VM was a platform showcasing many of the top skateboarding talents performing to music, and much of it being hip hop.

http://www.skateboardermag.com/411vm

Earning His Chops

Once getting to Austin, Clemits would be swept away by the music scene and the DIY nature of the Austin artists who were putting together their own shows. To this day, that do it yourself attitude is still with Clemits, who regularly puts on shows that serve as venues for Austin artists to showcase their art.

Shortly in time, many of his crew would also move to Austin. During this time, Clemits and MSG Crew would put out a series of demos. Following the release of their first professionally recorded album, “Jobs are for the Birds”, Clemits and MSG Crew would tour Europe. And after which, he would return home and release his first solo album, “Tomorrows Friend”. The coming years would be a sequence of independently released albums and touring.

In December of 2009 on the “More Everything Tour”, Clemits, Dubb Sicks, and Japanese Jesus would get the idea to form an acapella battle league in Austin, called the Texas Battle League.

DJ Charlie is one of the hardest working DJ's in Austin. The guy is everywhere. You'll catch him DJ'ing for many of the shows around town to holding it down at several weekly events like at Plush. His love and approach to his art and his craft really shine through as you talk to him. You can even tell by his choice of venue for this interview; the restaurant, Ramen Tatsu-ya, run by one of his idols, DJ Tats.

The DJ Charlie story is very much an intertwining of love and Hip Hop, not unlike Common's "I Used To Love H.E.R." At times you wonder, if he's chasing the girl or if he's chasing Hip Hop. I guess he's chasing both.

The Sirens Come Calling

The beginning of the story reads like a typical guy chases girl story only with a DJ twist. The steps to victory seem all so simple, yet as everyone knows, the execution would prove much more difficult. The game plan goes like this: girl likes DJ's, get into DJ'ing then get girl, score. And so, the journey starts and we find our heroine at Guitar Center buying a DJ box set with all of his hard earned cash.

DJ Charlie never did get the girl, but he did immediately fall in love with DJ'ing. A pivotal moment in his growth came at 14 years old when DJ Charlie ventured out to a rave. And where he stood hypnotized at the turntables listening to drum and bass. Over the next several years, he would amass a collection of hundreds of drum and bass records.

The high school years would be a mix of partying and childhood indiscretions. On one such occasion, while DJ'ing at a house party, the cops show up and bust the party. After his parents were called to pick him up at 4 in the morning, on the ride home, DJ Charlie springs out of the car to run away from the certain beating that would have surely come from his father. And as if by fate, the sounds of drum and bass called to him like sirens from a near by house. With a knock on the door and an introduction that was sure to have sounded shady, DJ Charlie finds his first DJ friend and mentor, B1 of Sonar DnB at Plush.

Finding Love and Hip Hop

As fate would have it, another girl would become the obsession of DJ Charlie. Only this time, he would get the girl and she would be his first love. This new love would expand his knowledge of Hip Hop, introducing him to old school Hip Hop like Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, Immortal Technique, A Tribe Called Quest and Black Star. This next chapter would see the birth of Hip Hop in DJ Charlie.

As DJ Charlie starts taking the business of music more seriously, he would start to make a name for himself by teaming up with Kydd of the LNS Crew. The partnership would result in tours Pac Div, Curren$y and even Public Enemy. However, even with all the trials and tribulations during these shows, DJ Charlie will tell you that he finally grew hair on his balls when he was invited into the Table Manners Crew by DJ Digg of HOTT Bookings. And that's because of the respect and reverence DJ Charlie has for DJ Tats and the TMC establishment.

So after finding love and Hip Hop, what does the future hold for our knight in shining armor? No one knows for sure. What is certain is that DJ Charlie will try his best to infect your minds with some dope ass music.
And if you thought the band’s name was a genius-ly crafted marketing stunt to coincide with Jay-Z’s recently released Magna Carta, you aren’t the only one. And that’s not the only magically serendipitous moments in the formation of the band, Magna Carda, composed of Megz Kelli (Rapper), Dougie Do (Producer), Eric Nikolaides (Guitar), Quentin Walker (Bass) and Joe Layton (Drums).

The flippant meeting was quickly brushed off as just another person met in the travels of life. At the time, both were still experimenting and discovering their own artistic styles. But as fate would have it, Megz and Dougie Do would meet again and realize that their unique styles could be molded into something unique unto itself. Early on, there was always a desire to form a band. However, for Megz and Dougie Do, the attempts at forming their own band would prove to be difficult.

But those frustrations would lead to two duo projects, Creature Creative and The Shoe String Theory. We see in Creature Creative the early experimentation by Dougie Do with sampling. And we witness in Megz, the voice of a young woman discovering a canvas to paint on with her pent-up emotions. From Creature Creative, here is Red Bottom Chronicles.

A year will go by before the duo will drop their next project. The Shoe String Theory would be a coming out party of sorts for the duo. Megz’s sound would grow to be inspired by neo-soul and her father’s gospel background. The poetry she brings in Shoe String Theory flows with a womanly strength. The ying to the yang, Dougie Do discovers the confidence of a man who’s lived around the world and influenced by sounds from bossa nova to electronic. You also see the influence of Jazz, which came from Dougie Do’s grandfather who was also a DJ in the Airforce. One of my favorite, here is Feel Good from Shoe String Theory.

The current chapter would be the formation of Magna Carda. After witnessing one of the legends, Mos Def at Emo’s with a full band, the gears and inspiration would be set in motion. I was also at the concert and remember that night well. Not only did you witness one of the greats, Austin was treated to greats of our own, LNS Crew, Riders Against the Storm, Crew 54 and Bavu Blakes. It was indeed magical.

They say serendipity is being at the right place at the right time. And the formation of Magna Carda is quite a serendipitous story. What else would you call finding your bass player disguised as the A/C maintenance guy by the name of Quentin Walker? How about finding your drummer, Joe Layton, while performing due to a last minute cancellation at the KVRX live show? Who just happens to be the son of Stevie Ray Vaughn’s drummer, Chris Layton. And then the cherry on top, you throw into the mix, Eric Nikolaides from America’s Got Talent from another one of Austin’s dynamic duo, Eric and Olivia.

They say life's a journey. While that may be true, many of us go through life with blinders on. We're constrained by our own fears, insecurities and trapped by dogma. When you meet Cory Kendrix, a member of the Austin hip-hop group, LNS Crew, you quickly realize that he is a nonconformist and the shackles of society do not pertain to him. In the soon to be released EP, “Ignorance”, Cory wants people to take those blinders off and be more aware of their own ignorance.

The life story of Cory Kendrix starts off in Oregon and at the young age of 11, he moved to Austin, TX. Soon after, Cory started working and developing his skills as an artist. He would blend his west coast influences with the unique Austin culture and sound that would become Cory’s self reflective smoker friendly sound. The time he spent working on his craft and art would lead to lifelong friendships and would eventually turn into the local powerhouse, LNS Crew.

The Cory Kendrix solo discography starts with a project called “The UnMixTape” and the most recent work, “Free Beer.” His historical works show a very introspective artist touching on such topics as relationships, drug use and coping with mental distress. The story of a man coming of age and figuring out life and the world around him is reflected in these earlier works.

“Ignorance”, the title of the soon to be released third solo project by Cory, in his own words will be very “ignorant”, very “ratchet” and more club friendly. “Ignorance” is the next step in the evolution of Cory as an artists and as a human being. The project will be a collection of his learnings about the artist lifestyle, the highs and lows and a warning of the pitfalls to avoid.

The first single, “Hold It In”, features fellow Austin artist Sertified along with Worldwide of San Antonio. The mellow trap production of Scott Pace gives the song a smooth house party feel which fits the strong collaboration between the three. Listen to the first single, “Hold It In” off of “Ignorance”.
In the past year, Cory along with LNS Crew, have been on a whirlwind tour across the country from California, NY, Atlanta and Texas. As part of the LNS Crew, Cory performed in LA with Chuck D of Public Enemy and other hip-hop legends on the HipHopGods Tour. (Cory wanted to give a huge shout out to Redbull and the Redbull team for putting the LNS Crew on.) And just recently, LNS Crew was announced as part of Fun Fun Fun Fest in November.

For the new EP, “Ignorance”, the planning for tours are already in the works, so be on the lookout for those. In the near future, you can catch Cory on Sunday, July 21st.

When this is posted, it will be the day of the 2012 election between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. While I think this election is of utmost importance, I will refrain from spewing my political views on this post. I will just leave it at, we are very fortunate to be in America and have the ability to express our political views freely and exercise our right to vote for those who govern us, so don't take it for granted.

I also want to impart on you the importance of the AHHS Monthly Mixtape Showcase Party on November 8th (this Thursday) at Red 7 presented by p-teK (who's done most of the leg work for the party) and myself. This show is not just any show, it is a celebration of the diverse Hip Hop landscape here in Austin. It is a chance for us to shine. It is a chance for the venues in town to take a second look at hosting local Hip Hop shows. The success of this show will mean that the culture we love and support can coexist and thrive in a city populated by indie rock and country.

And for the cynics out there, I want you to know that I am making nothing off the show. All the money from the show is going to the artists themselves. So this election year, join me and vote for local Hip Hop with your presence at the AHHS Monthly Mixtape Showcase Party!

Boy this summer's been hot! Well just when you thought it couldn't get much hotter, I'm about to put out the first of a monthly installment of mix tapes featuring only Austin hip hop artists. Every month I will be scouring and collecting music from artists in the Live Music Capital of the World and bringing them to you.

The purpose of the project, AHHS Monthly, is to bring awareness about the hip hop scene here in town. Austin is known for it's plentiful and abundant music scene. The city is dominated by great indie rock and country music that often eclipses all other music genres. Unbeknownst to many, the city does in fact have a very lively and beautiful hip hop scene. Just under the surface, you can see great DJ's on their turntables, break dancers in their bboy stance, artists decorating drab concrete canvases, and MC's rhyming about the human spirit. All touching the soul in the most powerful way.

With the AHHS Monthly Mixtape, I would like to change the awareness deficiency and what better way than to show people through music. Every month, I will be bundling together 10 songs from Austin hip hop artists, both established and up and coming. The mix tape will be given away for free and will contain mp3's and an html that detail the songs and the artists.

The first volume called simply "Blue" will drop in the last week of the month on Monday, July 30th through the AHHS Monthly Newsletter.

Enjoy your scalding summer!
I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

This is our hope. This is the faith that I go back to the South with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with a new meaning, “My country, ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim’s pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring.”

And if America is to be a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.

Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York.

Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!

Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California!

But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi.

From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual:

“Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”
Here's to hoping all the best to Japan and the Japanese people and may they get a plentiful amount of help and support!

Within our own Austin's Hip-Hop Community, we have a couple artists with ties to Japan, DJ Tako and Tats, who both have family in Japan. Here's to their safety and well being.

So tomorrow night at Plush, they're throwing a Japan benefit show where all proceeds go to the Tsunami Relief and helps the Japanese people affected. On hand will be some great Austin DJ's Tako, Tats, Digg, Crown, Kid Slyce, and Nick Nack.

Please support in your own way and let's show Japan that the Austin Hip-Hop Community Cares!
We recently added Facebook authentication to the site because we were seeing some unwanted data manipulation. We tried recovering as much data as we could. Apologies to those who have added to the site and saw their postings corrupted with gibberish. The good news is that for the last several weeks since putting in place the authentication system, we haven't seen any unwanted changes in the postings. Unfortunately, the experiment to have a completely open system where people can add Austin Hip-Hop Knowledge didn't go as planned, but needed a little adjustment. So now just log in with your Facebook account and you can post to the site and gets posted to your Facebook wall. Isn't that cool!
From the SOTU Department... Today we are very proud to launched a new website for the Austin Hip-Hop Scene. We are calling it the Austin Hip-Hop Scene Engine - Community Driven Hip-Hop Knowledge. The reason we are doing this is because we believe that hip-hop is all about community and with that community, there is knowledge/ideas/art that can and should be shared with the larger public.

Austin Hip-Hop Scene Engine is aimed to be the medium that allows the Austin Hip-Hop Community to share this knowledge. You will notice that the website allows and welcomes anyone and everyone to add knowledge to the website. We are excited at the opportunities and growth that will come about from the community and the Austin Hip-Hop Scene Engine. Will you help grow the community?-= MT =-http://www.blogger.com/profile/06633810755458563728noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15812579.post-71242009517419844542011-01-20T21:07:00.000-06:002011-01-20T21:07:07.714-06:00The Pharcyde - Mohawk - January 22, 2011

From the where did she go department... The Pharcyde @ the Mohawk on Saturday, Jan 22nd!
More info:

The Pharcyde (pronounced /ˈfɑrsaɪd/) is an alternative hip hop group from South Central Los Angeles, where the group's members grew up. The original four members of the group are Imani (Emandu Wilcox), Slimkid3 (Trevant Hardson), Bootie Brown (Romye Robinson) and Fatlip (Derrick Stewart).[1] DJ Mark Luv was the group's first DJ, followed by producer J-Swift and then J Dilla.[citation needed] The group is best known for the hit singles "Drop", "Passin' Me By" and "Runnin'", as well as their first album, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde.

Pharcyde group members Slimkid3, Bootie Brown, and Imani met as dancers in the late 1980s and dancing was their main ambition as late as 1990.[1] Around this time, Imani and Slimkid3 were in a group called "As Is" and later a group called the "Play Brothers",[1] whilst Bootie Brown was a backup dancer for Fatlip[1] (Fatlip being the last member to join the group[2]). Bootie Brown recalls that their earlier dancing careers influenced their rapping - "sometimes the way I rap is almost like the way I used to dance".[3] The group met Reggie Andrews, a local high-school music teacher who worked with the Dazz Band and Rick James, and who was a major musical influence on their debut album.[2][4] The group also met producer J-Swift around this time, as he was Reggie Andrews's "star pupil" according to the book Check the Technique.[5]-= MT =-http://www.blogger.com/profile/06633810755458563728noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15812579.post-91287461172512322722011-01-18T18:52:00.000-06:002011-01-18T18:52:44.360-06:00Music: Feddi Man - A Day to Remember

From the Ginkoba department...
Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist, and prominent leader in the African American civil rights movement.[1] He is best known for being an iconic figure in the advancement of civil rights in the United States and around the world, using nonviolent methods following the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi.[2] King is often presented as a heroic leader in the history of modern American liberalism.[3]

A Baptist minister, King became a civil rights activist early in his career.[4] He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president. King's efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he expanded American values to include the vision of a color blind society, and established his reputation as one of the greatest orators in American history.

In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other nonviolent means. By the time of his death in 1968, he had refocused his efforts on ending poverty and stopping the Vietnam War.

King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. federal holiday in 1986.-= MT =-http://www.blogger.com/profile/06633810755458563728noreply@blogger.com0
