Tre Hardson - Stubb's - May 24, 2006

Dude! Someone should really tell me these things! Almost missed Tre Hardson of Pharcyde at Stubb's on May 24th!

Man! I think I'm still drunk from the rum tasting at Cuba Libre last night! My friends are the bomb for getting me screwed up on rum... bastards! :)

More info:

Jazzy, soulful and melodic, Tre Hardson has re-emerged onto the hip hop scene with a new band, a new album and a diverse musical soundscape all his own. Formerly Slimkid3 of the legendary L.A. hip hop group The Pharcyde (known for their innovative style, humorous and off-beat lyrical imagery, and infectious beats), Hardson is exploring the boundaries of hip hop as a solo artist, replacing the standard industry format of drum machines and sampled beats with live instrumentation--provided by his 5-piece band, Fuqawi-- and collaborations with some of music's most adventurous and expressive performers such as spoken-word artists Saul Williams and Gaknew of Urban Poets, as well as MC Lyte, Chali 2na (Jurassic 5), Kim Hill (Black Eyed Peas), N'Dea Davenport (Brand New Heavies), and Dionna Nichelle to name a few. His 2002 record, "Liberation," pushes these boundaries with the artist's personal lyrical examination of life, love, personal evolution and music, while showcasing the well-crafted rhymes, thoughtful lyrics and rich vocal delivery that brought him acclaim with The Pharcyde. A new album is slated for release in March 2006 titled "Slimkid 3's Cafe."

People Under the Stairs - Emo's - May 29, 2006

Wanna hear some cats that know what hip hop's all about!?! People Under the Stairs will be hittin' Emo's on May 29th as part of their The Stepfather tour (the new CD). Also on tap are Time Machine, Gym Class Heroes, and Psalm One!

Man this was a packed weekend! Drove down to Houston for my bro's bday on Friday, Joby and Susan's graduation on Saturday, and Mother's Day today! Took mom to Dim Sum... such an Asian thing to do... :)

More info:

People Under the Stairs formed when Mike Turner (Double K) and Chris Portugal (Thes One) met on the fringe of L.A.'s late-'90s hip-hop underground. The duo, devoted to jazzy samples, danceable beats, intricate rhyming skills, and laid-back humor, debuted in 1998 with the acclaimed The Next Step and followed it up in 2000 with Question in the Form of an Answer. Gathering heavy praise and touring with De La Soul, the group took their road experiences and brought it to the studio to record their next album. The final results appeared in the summer of 2002 under the name O.S.T. This highly acclaimed release, which sound-scanned over 35,000 to date, brought People Under The Stairs to the forefront of underground hip-hop. Its follow-up album, Or Stay Tuned complemented this release and allowed the group to headline nation-wide tours.

So I hit up my friend's wedding in Dallas this weekend... congrats to Joe and Shilpa! I came across so many situations where I recognized people's faces but had forgotten their names... embarrassing... at least drinks were freely flowing! :)

More info:

On paper, Soul Position, which is the collision of Blueprint and RJD2, looks like hip-hop's next big supergroup. When he's on, Blueprint's voice wraps around beats with an aggressive elasticity reminiscent of a young, hungry Del, utilizing clever wordplay and conveying a personable honesty. He's carried an underground buzz for the better part of a year and Urb magazine recently tagged him as one of the "next 100". And RJD2-- do we really need to recap this man's accomplishments of late? To paraphrase the esteemed Big L: if production was a game, RJ would be MVP.
